ECO4: The Main Solar Grant Scheme
The Energy Company Obligation (ECO4) is a UK government scheme running until March 2026 and provides the most substantial solar grants available to eligible UK households.
Who Qualifies for ECO4?
You must meet ONE of these criteria:
- Receive means-tested benefits (Universal Credit, Pension Credit, Income Support, Child Tax Credit, JSA, ESA, Working Tax Credit, Housing Benefit)
- Household income under £31,000 AND Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) rating of D, E, F, or G
- Referred by your local council as "vulnerable to cold"
What ECO4 Covers
ECO4 provides up to £10,000 for whole-house energy improvements, which can include:
- Solar panels (typically 3-4kW systems)
- Loft and wall insulation
- New heating systems
- Solar battery storage (when combined with panels)
Important: ECO4 rarely funds solar panels alone. The scheme prioritises insulation first. You'll typically receive solar panels as part of a package that includes loft insulation, cavity wall insulation, or similar improvements.
How to Apply for ECO4
- Check eligibility at simpleenergyadvice.org.uk
- Get free home assessment from ECO4-approved installer
- Energy supplier funds the improvements (no upfront cost to you)
- Installation completed within 8-12 weeks
0% VAT: Everyone's "Grant"
The most valuable benefit available to ALL solar panel buyers is the 0% VAT rate on installations, a UK government policy introduced in April 2022 and extended through March 2027.
| System Size | Cost at 20% VAT | Cost at 0% VAT | Your Saving |
|---|---|---|---|
| 3kW | £5,400 | £4,500 | £900 |
| 4kW | £6,600 | £5,500 | £1,100 |
| 6kW | £9,000 | £7,500 | £1,500 |
The 0% VAT applies to solar panels, inverters, batteries (when installed with panels), mounting equipment, and labour. This is effectively a £900-1,500 grant that everyone receives automatically.
Smart Export Guarantee (SEG): Ongoing Payments
The Smart Export Guarantee (SEG) is a UK government scheme requiring energy suppliers to pay for exported solar electricity. While not technically a grant, SEG provides ongoing income, effectively subsidising your system.
How SEG Works: Energy suppliers pay you for every unit of electricity you export to the grid. Rates in 2026:
| Supplier | Export Rate | Annual Payment (4kW System) |
|---|---|---|
| Octopus Outgoing Fixed | 15p/kWh | £378 |
| E.ON Next Export | 12p/kWh | £302 |
| OVO Energy | 8p/kWh | £202 |
| British Gas | 4p/kWh | £101 |
Based on 70% export rate (2,520 kWh annually) for typical 4kW system.
Over 25 years, SEG payments add £7,500-9,500 to your total returns, making it a significant long-term subsidy.
Local Council Grants
Some councils offer additional solar grants, though availability varies widely:
Current Council Schemes (2026)
- Warrington Borough Council: £1,000 grant for solar panels + £500 for battery storage
- Scotland Home Energy Scotland: Interest-free loans up to £7,500
- Wales Nest Scheme: Free solar for eligible low-income households
- Various Scottish Councils: Grants of £500-2,000 through Area Based Schemes
Check your local council's website or call their energy advice service. Many councils don't widely advertise solar grants, so it's worth asking directly.
Interest-Free Loans and Finance Schemes
If you don't qualify for grants, several schemes offer affordable financing:
Scotland: Home Energy Scotland Loan
- Interest-free loans up to £7,500
- Cashback of £1,000-2,000 depending on measures installed
- 10-year repayment period
- No credit check, income assessment only
Wales: Interest-Free Loan Scheme
- Loans up to £5,000 for solar panels
- 5-10 year repayment
- Managed by Welsh Government
Commercial Finance Options
Many solar installers offer finance packages:
- Typical rates: 6.9-9.9% APR over 5-10 years
- Monthly payments: £90-120 for £6,000 system over 5 years
- Your solar savings often cover most/all of the monthly payment
What About the Feed-in Tariff?
The Feed-in Tariff (FIT) closed to new applicants in March 2019. If you installed solar panels before this date, you continue receiving FIT payments (typically 4-16p/kWh) for the remaining duration of your 20-year agreement.
New installations in 2026 use the Smart Export Guarantee instead, which offers similar or better rates (12-15p/kWh) than later FIT tariffs, though without the generation payment that early FIT recipients received.
Combining Grants and Subsidies
You can stack multiple benefits to maximise savings:
Example 1: ECO4 Eligible Household
- ECO4 grant: £10,000 (covers 4kW solar + insulation)
- 0% VAT: Already included in ECO4 pricing
- SEG payments: £302/year (£7,500 over 25 years)
- Total benefit: £17,500 for zero upfront cost
Example 2: Scottish Household (Non-ECO4)
- Home Energy Scotland loan: £7,500 interest-free
- Cashback: £1,000
- 0% VAT saving: £1,500
- SEG payments: £7,500 over 25 years
- Total benefit: £10,000 + interest-free financing
Example 3: Standard English Household
- 0% VAT saving: £1,100
- SEG payments: £7,500 over 25 years
- Bill savings: £25,000 over 25 years
- Total benefit: £33,600 from £5,500 investment
Regional Differences: Where Gets Best Support?
| Region | Available Grants | Maximum Support |
|---|---|---|
| Scotland | HES Loan, Area Grants, ECO4 | £10,000-12,000 |
| Wales | Nest Scheme, Interest-Free Loans, ECO4 | £8,000-10,000 |
| England | ECO4, Some Local Grants | £10,000 (ECO4 eligible only) |
| N. Ireland | ECO4 equivalent, Limited schemes | £6,000-8,000 |
Future Grant Schemes: What's Coming?
Several new schemes are expected in 2026-2027:
- Great British Insulation Scheme: Launched 2023, continuing through 2026. Provides grants for insulation + solar to middle-income households (£34,000-52,000 income).
- ECO5 (from April 2026): Replacement for ECO4 with similar eligibility but potentially higher grant amounts (rumoured £12,000-15,000).
- Heat and Buildings Strategy funding: Government committed £3.9bn for home energy improvements 2025-2028, some allocated to solar grants.
